On Conversation

10:18 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

I have been thinking about the nature of conversations lately. With the political season ramping up and discussions about RFRA and other big issues hitting the spot light, it has me thinking about how we engage with those who are different from us.

What I’m seeing are two kinds of people. The first is the “belligerent tool”. The second is the “milksop doormat”. Both are unhelpful and neither really bring anything to the conversation.

There’s a third way. A better way.

The belligerent tool is the person who cares more about being right, than getting it right. This person will pick fights and arguments for the sake of winning. He or she couldn’t care less about “truth” or anything along those lines. They just want to walk away from an argument claiming victory. They use terrible logic and thinking to bring about that end. If they realize that they are losing they start name calling and making personal attacks on their “opponent”. When the opponent cries foul, they call them thin-skinned or weak.

The milksop doormat is despicable as well. They are rutter-less, they have no backbone, or hold to anything. They take note of the prevailing winds and go with it. They want to be broadly liked. They just want everyone to “love” one another. They don’t care so much about folks getting it right, as long as everyone is happy and feels good. When engaging with this person you’re often left wondering, “When are we going to sing kumbaya?”

But there is a third way. There is a way to engage where you don’t have to be a belligerent tool or a milksop doormat. The third way is the learner with conviction. The learner with conviction understands and knows what they think to be true. However, they have a unique skill that they have worked hard to develop, humility. This skill allows them to actually be interested in what the other person has to say. It allows them to hear from the person with whom they are discussing a topic. They can ask legitimate questions, they can seek to understand the other’s presuppositions and also be willing to evaluate their own. They care more about getting it right than being right. They are willing to argue for and stand for their convictions but with the humility to know that they might be wrong.

This third way is hard. It takes practice. You have to work at it. Each of us must make a decision to embrace it and then keep at it. Most of us will default to belligerence or doormat. But, we can fend those off and choose to be a learner with conviction.

Which are you?

Don’t know? Head back to your Facebook account and take a look at how you engage in comment threads. Better yet, ask someone else to do that for you.

The Biggest Issue

8:36 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

A good friend asked me two questions about church planting last week. The first question he asked me, “What is the biggest thing you’ve learned?” The second one, “What’s the biggest issue you’ve faced while church planting?” He was quick to note that the two questions are not the same thing.

While I didn’t have to think very hard about the first question, the second one took me a second. Not because I didn’t know the answer.

I just didn’t like the answer.

The single biggest issue I face as a church planter? Me. Myself. I. My own sin-sick heart.

I know I’m supposed to be all holy and Jesus-y but, I’m pretty much just a busted up, run of the mill sinner. Imperfect and broken, desperately clinging to grace and mercy, every single moment of the day. I put up a good front, people probably think I’m a pretty “righteous dude”, but when they get to know me, they realize how mistaken they were.

One of my favorite things about social media is the ability to keep up with friends. I can scan through the feeds and see how amazing their lives are. Especially some of my friends who are church planting too. They used a model called, “launch large”. They spent gobs of money on advertising, they worked their fingers to the bone passing fliers out to thousands of people, they put up those little signs everywhere. They rented cool space. They found a ridiculously cool band. They have sets on their stage that leave me slack-jawed. Overnight it seems they have hundreds of people showing up to hear them preach.

Do I celebrate and respond with great joy? Nope. I am green with envy.

That’s right, I am jealous. Oh, I hide it with critiques of form, missiology, and practice. But, at the root of it, I am so jealous.

When the jealousy hits, when the envy rises up, it makes me question everything that I’ve done over the last two years. Doubt grows in me like a weed. I wonder if we’ve been doing it all wrong. Maybe we should have rented cool space, spent lots of cash on ads, found a cool band, and put on the best worship service in town?

The envy leads to doubt and the doubt leads to fear. Have we missed it? Are we failing? Have I led these crazy people who said, “I’m in!” down a dead end? Can we make it? Will we be poor? Am I failing my family? Will I provide for my wife and kids?

You see, I’m the biggest issue I face a church planter. My sinful heart. My lack of faith. My unwillingness to trust. These are the battles that have to be fought and won on a daily basis.

On Discipleship

7:46 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

I had a conversation with a friend the other day about what it’s like to do church planting. He asked me two questions. The first one was, “What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned church planting?”

What a great question. I didn’t even have to hesitate to answer. The biggest thing I’ve learned church planting is that church programs may be the biggest problem we face in the American church.

I know you’re thinking, “Woah, woah, woah…lots of people trust Christ because of church programs! Those are good!”

I hear you, I’m not intentionally bad mouthing the all pervasive church program. But, what I’ve come to realize is that programming has replaced discipleship which means it has short circuited the maturity process of Jesus followers. We equate maturity with attendance at our programs. If a kid comes faithfully every week to youth group then they are growing. If an adult shows up every week to the Sunday School class they are Elder material.

What I am finding out is that real growth takes place in the gaps. People need time to work out their “salvation with fear and trembling.” We need to replace the programs with discipleship. Jesus followers need to be pressed into growing in the character and competency of Jesus. Programs allow us to go through the motions, fully engaged discipleship keeps us from falling into that trap.

We must do whatever we can do to make sure that the growth process is not short circuited. We must not equate attendance with maturity, but seek out real growth as a sign of spiritual maturity taking place.

So, are all church programs inherently bad? NO! Local congregations should be organizing kingdom efforts as Christ’s ambassadors. The issue that we must wrestle is what are these programs for? What is their purpose? How do they fit into our responsibility as representatives of the King? As we create forms and structures within congregations we need to ask about how they fit into the bigger picture of the discipleship process. We need to work through the timetable for how long they last, there needs to be a planned obsolescence for all programming. This keeps us from allowing a program to become equated to maturity.

At the end of the day, it comes down purpose. We must choose to be purposeful in our actions to build mature believers. We must place discipleship as the fundamental priority and then allow that to drive the creation of programming.
