Socrates said, "An unexamined life is not worth living." This is my feeble attempt at examining my life.

God is Sovereign and Good

I am regularly teased about my “sayings.” In particular, “Be awesome. Don’t suck.” I find it pretty funny. It cracks me up and makes me want to use the phrase more and more.

There’s a little saying that my friend Bob said once and it has stuck, “God is sovereign and God is good.” There is so much there. It has become my life’s motto. I think people I have mentored have heard this phrase more than any other over the years.

God is sovereign.

This means that God is in control. I don’t have to worry about things, God’s got it. When I look at the broken world around me it creates little worry. Why? Because I know that God is sovereign. As Steven Curtis Chapman says, “The king of the jungle is still on his throne.” The jungle can’t overwhelm me because the king is ruling. When I’m surprised by the brokenness of the world, I can know that in God’s sovereignty, he’s not.

God is good.

What is God was sovereign but evil? That would be horrible. But, I can trust this sovereign because I can trust in his goodness. God is good, therefore I can trust him. God’s goodness would be useless if he wasn’t sovereign. His sovereignty makes his goodness something beautiful to behold. God’s goodness means that his justice and righteousness will prevail even when it seems that all hope is lost. When the world is darkest the light of God’s goodness sovereignly shines through.

More and more I am thinking about the sovereign goodness of God. It leaves me overwhelmed at times. His grace and mercy are made manifest through this reality. I can trust him completely and fully. Ultimately this means I don’t have to trust in myself. This is a glorious thought, because I fail. I fail regularly. But God never does.

God is sovereign and good, that’s beautiful.
