Socrates said, "An unexamined life is not worth living." This is my feeble attempt at examining my life.

Adversity and Calling

Adversity is a trip. It is in the midst of adversity that you begin to really understand your calling. If you’re called you will fight through the adversity.

A favorite movie of mine is An Officer and A Gentleman. Mayo had to fight and battle. He could have quit. But he had a calling.

When you’re called you can identify with Mayo, “I got nothing else!”

In our broken world adversity is not an “if” but a “when.” When it comes the question becomes, “What will you do?”

When we are faced with adversity we can do one of two things. First, we can quit. This quitting is not a bad thing. It’s a recognition that we have not been called. There is nothing wrong with that. We can look in the mirror and say, “I’m not called to this. It is time for me to move on to the next thing.” That’s very hard to do. It takes great courage to say, “I was wrong. God is not in this.”

Our second option is to fight. We can battle through the adversity. If we choose to fight we may come to the end and say, “I was wrong. God is not in this.” However, we might come to the end and say, “God is in this and has been. He has refined my faith and changed me through the adversity.” The stories of overcoming adversity become formational for the rest of your life.

Like any other kid that grew up in Sunday School I dig the story of David and Goliath. There’s something awesome about a little nobody taking down a giant, isn’t there? Our teacher may have used a felt board, but my imagination saw the Philistine crash to the ground bloodied and broken. What I didn’t know until I was much older was that David was not some novice. He was battle tested from his time as a shepherd. The Scriptures tell us that he fought off bears and lions. He had no fear of a man because he had faced far worse enemies protecting his flock.

David was prepared for his moment of glory through the trials of adversity protecting his sheep.

How will you respond in the face of adversity? Are you really called to the things you’re doing?
