Jesus Story and My Story

10:16 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

There have been times when I’ve experienced sincere brokenness. It’s painful. It’s hard. It doesn’t seem like a season that will ever end. As I’ve worked my way through them and come out the other side I’m grateful. I’m grateful not for the season to have ended but for the transformation that has taken place.

Hebrews 12:1-3 says this,

Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls! (The Message by Eugene Peterson)

“…go over that story again…” YES! Again and again and again. That story, Jesus story. We must go there and never stop going back there. Jesus story reminds us that God is sovereign and good. We can trust him and he will bring us through.

I had a friend who would say, “Bro, you so need to go gospel yourself.” He was saying that I needed to go back to the story of Jesus and read it again. I needed to hear about the Cross, shame, and never losing sight of where I’m headed.

This song from U2 speaks to me as I think about going back to the Jesus story…

When Leadership Fails

10:03 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

I love that I’m part of a denomination that has as its leadership model one based in community. Local churches are governed by what’s called a Session. The Session is a group of Elders. These Elders are elected by the people of the church to lead.

This model is beautiful.

It’s beautiful when it works.

What happens when it doesn’t work? What happens when leadership fails? What happens if the people chosen to lead have little integrity or get caught up in a desire for power? What happens when they become untouchable? When leaders make it clear that you cannot question them or “It won’t go well for you…”

Leadership failure exists in every organization and in every community. It happens because people are broken and sinful. Leadership failures are similar to death and taxes, you can count on it.

While leadership failures are expected, when they happen in the Church it hurts just a little bit more. It makes you a little bit more sad. The sting lasts just a bit longer.

You expect more from people who are leaders in the Church. You expect humility. Your expectation is that they will seek to lead like Jesus. When you interact with leaders in the Church you expect them to be people integrity and honor.

So what do you do when they fail?

As I continue to watch failure after failure in leadership of the Church it breaks my heart. I’m deeply saddened by the power grabs and short-sightedness. I am sickened by the cover ups and posturing. I despise how leaders treat their employees. I am disgusted my decisions driven by the almighty dollar.

What can I do? All I can do is watch over me and my congregation. I can try to make sure that the failings I see elsewhere don’t happen here by creating a culture where leaders are held accountable and are never in a position of being thought of as “The God Committee.”  I can make sure that our leaders are never above questions or being challenged. I can try to set an example of servant leadership.

When leadership fails we must learn from it. Every leadership failure can be a lesson for us if we choose to learn. Sadly, the lessons are everywhere.

Hope and Resurrection

12:38 PM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

I’ve been thinking quite a bit about the resurrection. I have been wondering about its ramifications on our every day lives. If the resurrection is real and Jesus is living and reigning, how does that change things for us? How do we live differently? Does have any effect on us whatsoever? Or is the resurrection just a nice religious concept that we talk about at Easter?

The resurrection deeply influences how we handle the hard things in life. Hope is something that we are able to hold on to because of the resurrection. When we go through the dark times, the painful times, and the sad times we need hope. Hope is not something that can just be drummed up. For hope to be real it needs to be connected to something real.

In John’s gospel there’s a story about a family. It’s a story of hope and resurrection. I’ve been thinking a lot about this story lately. Maybe it will grab your heart too.

Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus wept. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?”

Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” (John 11:1-44 ESV)

Art and Science

11:34 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

Many things in our lives are both art and science. Over the last couple of weeks I have taken up golf again. When I was growing up my brothers and I played somewhat regularly at the course down the street. After I left for college I rarely ever played again. My son has decided to learn the game and now I am back into it. Golf is a game of art and science.

There are certain things that I have to do technically to strike the ball well. When I do those things right, the ball flies! When I do them wrong the ball goes nowhere. This is the science of golf.

When I get close to the green there is an art that comes into play. The ability to put spin on the ball and to strike it with just the right amount of force. Putting is more art than science.

Being on mission with Jesus is very similar. There is an art and science. The science comes to play as you learn how to study the Bible, doctrine, and understand the sacraments.

The art is learning how to engage with your neighbors. Within the evangelical subculture it becomes easy to confuse this with science. We have tried to make conversation and relationship a science. There are a multitude of trainings that you can go through to learn how to share the message of Jesus. When we do this we miss the point. We lose a bit of our humanity and we lose the relationship.

Peter talks about how we are to proclaim the excellencies of Jesus. This is an emotional response to the grace of Jesus. We are overwhelmed by his grace, mercy, and love so we cannot contain ourselves. Just like the newlywed or the young mother, we naturally proclaim the excellencies of Jesus.

Dwell on how excellent Jesus is and your heart will be full. A full heart will overflow into a proclamation.

What’s In A Name?

11:22 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

When my wife, Amy, was pregnant with each of our children it was stressful. Shocking right? But, do you know what was the most stressful aspect of the whole pregnancy thing? Naming our kids. Your name marks you. It is how you’ll be known for the rest of your life. As the son of a teacher there were certain names we couldn’t use because of “…that kid…” This limited our choices. We chose Ethan (from the word “strong” in Hebrew) and Elizabeth (meaning “God’s oath” pointing to his covenantal nature). Naming our children was so stressful.

What about God? Does he have a name? What is it? What does it tell us about him?

God has a name. The Scriptures tell us to not take his “name” in vain. This “name” is referring to his essence, to his very identity. That’s how names worked in the ancient near East. How can an incomprehensible God have a name? He has a name because he condescends to us. That means that for the sake of relationship with his creatures, he comes down to our level.

God reveals his ultimate name in Exodus 3:13-14 to Moses. “I Am Who I Am.” The Hebrew is “YHWH.” God’s nature simply is. This name was so personal that the Jewish people refused even to speak it to avoid defiling it. YHWH is used only in correlation with the Hebrew God in the Bible.

There are other names that are applied to God throughout the Bible and each one gives us some insight into the nature of who God is. These names though are broadly applied to gods and not just the Hebrew God. El, Elohim, and Elyon point to God’s strength and might. Elohim is the plural of El and when it is used in relation to the God of the Bible it points to the fullness of his power. Adonai declares God’s nature as the ruler or judge. Shaddai points to God’s power. In the New Testament there are Greek translations to the Hebrew. Theos (god) equates to El/Elohim/Elyon. Kurios (lord) ties in with YHWH. And then the personal Pater (father).

God’s names are a big deal. They’re a big deal because they help us to know who God is, they reveal his nature to us. But, more than that they show us that he wants to connect to us. The incomprehensible God has come down to our level and given us a glimpse into who he is. He wants us to know him. He has chosen to kneel down, like an adult to a young child, and look us in the eyes and say, “This is me. This is who I AM.”

God is Sovereign and Good

10:21 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

I am regularly teased about my “sayings.” In particular, “Be awesome. Don’t suck.” I find it pretty funny. It cracks me up and makes me want to use the phrase more and more.

There’s a little saying that my friend Bob said once and it has stuck, “God is sovereign and God is good.” There is so much there. It has become my life’s motto. I think people I have mentored have heard this phrase more than any other over the years.

God is sovereign.

This means that God is in control. I don’t have to worry about things, God’s got it. When I look at the broken world around me it creates little worry. Why? Because I know that God is sovereign. As Steven Curtis Chapman says, “The king of the jungle is still on his throne.” The jungle can’t overwhelm me because the king is ruling. When I’m surprised by the brokenness of the world, I can know that in God’s sovereignty, he’s not.

God is good.

What is God was sovereign but evil? That would be horrible. But, I can trust this sovereign because I can trust in his goodness. God is good, therefore I can trust him. God’s goodness would be useless if he wasn’t sovereign. His sovereignty makes his goodness something beautiful to behold. God’s goodness means that his justice and righteousness will prevail even when it seems that all hope is lost. When the world is darkest the light of God’s goodness sovereignly shines through.

More and more I am thinking about the sovereign goodness of God. It leaves me overwhelmed at times. His grace and mercy are made manifest through this reality. I can trust him completely and fully. Ultimately this means I don’t have to trust in myself. This is a glorious thought, because I fail. I fail regularly. But God never does.

God is sovereign and good, that’s beautiful.

Faith My Eyes

3:05 PM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 1:3-11 ESV)

So Paul begins his letter to the Philippians. Most believe this letter to be a thank you note from Paul to the church in Philippi. It’s a beautiful letter and one that I go back to often. The tone of the letter is encouraging. When I read it, I feel happy and content.

I have been meditating on, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Paul was confident that God would bring about the maturity of the Christians in Philippi.

As I think about what God is doing in Ypsilanti through our church planting effort, I feel very much the same. God has begun something here. He has started something different from the norm. Through this church planting effort Christians and non-Christians are talking to one another about things that matter. Christians are growing in their faith in real ways. We are beginning to see the beginnings of multiplication. These are all things that many said couldn’t happen.

We didn’t begin by hanging a shingle and starting a cool worship service. We knew if we did this, we could collect a bunch of Christians. That wasn’t the work that God called us to do. He called us to make disciples and a people who multiply their lives. We can see this beginning.

I am so hopeful and encouraged.

I am confident that this thing that God has begun, he will bring it to completion.
