Socrates said, "An unexamined life is not worth living." This is my feeble attempt at examining my life.

Mission and Vision

Vision and mission. These are two words you’ll hear me say often. In some circles they could be understood as “buzz words” but, for me, they have become a way of life.

I had breakfast not long ago with a good friend who is thinking about a major life change and entering into ministry. There is nothing I love more than having followed God’s call into ministry. This calling has freed me up to follow my passions. The calling has allowed me to experience and do things that I would never have done otherwise. Breakfast with my friend got me thinking about that call.

How did I know it was my calling?

In some ways the call has changed over the years. As I graduated from University I knew I was called to serve with Campus Crusade for Christ, now Cru. I was young and idealistic. My wife, Amy, and I believed that if we changed the campus we could change the world. Recent world events (the Arab Spring and others) have born this reality out. We believed in our deepest of hearts that Cru was the way God was calling us to serve.

For nearly a decade that was true.

We owned the mission and vision of Cru deep inside us. It was our DNA. Win, build, send were not nice ideas, they had become part of us.

Somewhere around year 8 something changed in us. We could no longer sit across from people and cast the vision of Cru to raise support. We didn’t own Cru’s vision and mission any longer. Something had changed within us. We were no longer compelled by Cru.

What has not changed, what has not wavered over the years is a compulsion for win, build, and send.

Amy and I are passionate about seeing people come to know Jesus, grow in their faith, and sent out to multiply their lives.

The mission and vision of Jesus has captivated us.

It was this mission and vision that drove us to the local church. As I looked around me I began to realize that there was a world bigger than the campus. We needed to engage with it and speak into it. There were people who needed the gospel in every part of our society. I could not simply look down from my ivory tower and simply hope that someone would go.

We went. The mission and vision drove us.

I probably use the phrase mission and vision too much. Or maybe I don’t use it enough.

We would love for you to join us on mission in Ypsilanti as we build a movement of win, build, and send. You can learn more here at The Antioch Movement.
