“Lavished”

10:06 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

The letter to the church at Ephesus was written to a community of Christ followers by Paul. Paul was writing to shape their identities in the gospel. He was so excited about writing to them about Jesus that he started his letter with a single, huge, sentence that contains seven verbs:blessed, chose, destined, bestowed, lavished, made known, and gather up.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight… (Ephesians 1:7-8 ESV)

The grace that frees us in Christ also redeems us. God doesn’t go half way. He lavishes grace on us “in all wisdom and insight.” What does “lavished” mean? To lavish is to “bestow extravagant quantities.”

When we say that God lavishes grace upon us it is more than simply a quantitative concept. It is also qualitative. His grace is inexhaustible. This means that there is no end to it. He will never come to the end of his rope. We are completely free from shame and guilt.

The forgiveness of our sin knows no bound.

If you believed and knew that God’s grace is without end how would that free you to live and love?

“Bestowed”

7:13 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

The letter to the church at Ephesus was written to a community of Christ followers by Paul. Paul was writing to shape their identities in the gospel. He was so excited about writing to them about Jesus that he started his letter with a single, huge, sentence that contains seven verbs: blessed, chose, destined, bestowed, lavished, made known, and gather up.

to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. (Ephesians 1:6 ESV)

This fourth “rocket verb” is a tough one to translate. That’s why it is translated differently: favored, freely given, blessed, bestowed…

The dynamic of what Paul is trying to say in regards to the grace is dramatic. It’s like someone telling a story where they were so embarrassed that they “died a thousand deaths.” In this case Paul is so overwhelmed by God’s grace that he’s saying we’ve been graced a thousand graces.

God is under no compulsion to give us this grace. He does so freely and he does so in an overwhelming way. God’s “glorious grace” has been freely given and this was done in the “Beloved.” Who is this Beloved? He is Jesus. In Jesus we are given grace. It cost him dearly but costs us, nothing.

When we grasp that grace that has graced us grace a thousand times it frees us to not seek the approval of others.

What would your day to day look like if you weren’t chasing down the approval of other people?

“Destined”

7:53 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

The letter to the church at Ephesus was written to a community of Christ followers by Paul. Paul was writing to shape their identities in the gospel. He was so excited about writing to them about Jesus that he started his letter with a single, huge, sentence that contains seven verbs: blessed, chose, destined, bestowed, lavished, made known, and gather up.

The third of seven verbs that explode the opening sentence in Ephesians is “destined” or “predestined”. Check it out here…

…he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will…

Ephesians 1:5, ESV

What a remarkable thought! We were not simply chosen, but we have a destination, a place, a purpose in the world. The word that the ESV translates “predestines” looks like this in Greek, προορίσας. It’s a real word, not a word that has been lost to antiquity. If you were at the airport in Greece you would see this at your gate telling you where the plane was heading.

In Christ, we have been destined to be the Father’s sons and daughters. All of this is according to the purpose of his will.

How does knowing that, in Christ, you have a purpose and place in the world? That you’re not simply lost in space to figure it all out on your own?

“Chosen”

8:55 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

The letter to the church at Ephesus was written to a community of Christ followers by Paul. Paul was writing to shape their identities in the gospel. He was so excited about writing to them about Jesus that he started his letter with a single, huge, sentence that contains seven verbs: blessed, chose, destined, bestowed, lavished, made known, and gather up.

The second word, “chose” is found in Eph 1:4:

…even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.

How remarkable is this that God chose us before we could have ever done something earn his favor?

I asked the kids in our missional community about being chosen on the playground. It was clear that you didn’t want to be chosen last. Being chosen last meant that you weren’t any good, that you weren’t known, and that nobody respected you. But, being chosen first meant the opposite! You were good at the game, you were known, or you were respected.

God did the ultimate “choosing first”. He did it “before the foundation of the world.” How beautiful and wonderful is that!?

Eugene Peterson says it this way,

And yes, God chose us. It wasn’t a last-minute thing because he felt sorry for us and no one else would have us, like a stray mutt at the dog pound, or an orphan whom nobody adopted. He chose us “before the foundation of the world.” We are in on the action, long before we have any idea that we are in on the action. We are cosmic.

Practice Resurrection, 59

I love that, “we are cosmic”! How do you feel knowing that God chose you? That he picked you from “before the foundation of the world”?
