Socrates said, "An unexamined life is not worth living." This is my feeble attempt at examining my life.

What’s A Learner?

10:14 AM Posted by Daniel Rose , No comments

What does it mean to be a learner? We talk about it a lot. We think that there is value in people be learners. Sometimes we even think that there is value in being learner ourselves. But what is a learner?

A Learner is Honest

For some to be real learner they have to be honest. This means that they don’t believe that they already have the answers to the questions that they are asking. Asking a question with the belief that you already know the answer is a form of intellectual dishonesty. This morning I had coffee with a real learner. He asked questions and listened for the answers. He made connections to his own thinking but, took in what I had to say. He was honest.

A Learner Listens

Listening is another hallmark of the learner. You can tell if someone is listening or waiting to talk. If someone is waiting to talk they are not interested in learning. You cannot learn if you do not listen. If you’re waiting to talk it means that you believe you know the answers and the person across from you has little to offer.

A Learner Changes

When we learn it necessitates a change either in belief or behavior. If we don’t change then the new information we have received is nothing more than data points. When we learn the data becomes knowledge, true knowledge is experiential.

What would you add to this list?
